DAVID FRANKLIN PAULEY, 66, of Kenova, died Friday, December 2, 2011, at his home. He was a retired boat Captain for the Inland Marine Company and Ingram Barge Company. He was born July 29, 1945 in Wayne County to Brady Franklin Pauley, who preceded him in death and Dorothy (Watkins) Pauley, who survives. Mr. Pauley was a member of the Apostolic New Life Tabernacle. He united in marriage to Jeanette (Phillips) Pauley, who survives. Additional survivors include his children, Greg Donally, Ronnie Johnson, Danise Johnson, and Angie Johnson; his brother, Clinton Pauley, his sister, Debbie Pauley, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, along with a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his father, Mr. Pauley was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Wells. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home with Rev. Hicky officiating. Burial will follow in the Swan Creek Cemetery at Crown City, Ohio, where Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 16 Honor Guard. MANDA LOU ADKINS, 92, of Wayne, W.Va., widow of Bernard G. Adkins, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Wayne Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Johnny Jackson. Burial will follow at Community Memorial Gardens, Wayne, W.Va. She was born November 8, 1919 in Wayne, W.Va., a daughter of the late Okey and Maude Bradshaw Dean. Manda was a homemaker and member of Canada Chapel. Her sister, Ruby France, also preceded her in death, along with four brothers, Homer, Edgar, Donald and Charlie Dean. Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Dyer (Kenny) of Huntington, W.Va.; six sons, Bernard Keith Adkins (Pauline) of Wayne, W.Va., Dean Adkins (Mary) of Lavalette, W.Va., Neil Adkins (Evelyn) of Wayne, W.Va., Toney Adkins (Drema) of Genoa, W.Va., Doug Adkins (Peggy) of Wayne, W.Va., William Adkins (Kim) of Huntington, W.Va.; two sisters, Betty Napier and Dot Stiltner of Wayne, W.Va.; a brother, Frank Dean of Wayne, W.Va.; twelve grandchildren, Rob Adkins, Tim Adkins, David Adkins, Eric Adkins, Kristi Booton, Susan Sansom, Mark Adkins, Jon Adkins, Caleb Dyer, Kyle Dyer, Alicia Papas and Becky Smith; fourteen great grandchildren, Robbie Adkins, David Adkins, Madison Adkins, Ethan Adkins, Autumn Booton, Reagan Booton, Kevin Sansom, Cody Sansom, Mason Adkins, Sophia Adkins, Brady Dyer, Peyton Davis, Heidi Davis and Olivia Davis; one great-great grandchild, Camaron Adkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. CHARLES J. "CHARLIE" BEAVER, 71, of Kenova, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. He was born Dec. 15, 1939, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Clarence and Marie Blake Beaver. Charlie was a retired insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance. He was a member of Community of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Marine veteran. Charlie belonged to American Legion Post No. 177 Barboursville, W.Va., a member of Elks Lodge BPOE 942 Catlettsburg, Ky., and a Kentucky Colonel. Members of the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 93 Kenova will conduct military graveside rites. He is survived by his wife, Linda Elliott Beaver; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sonya and Bill Harchaoui of Dayton, Ohio, and Andi and Eric Simmons of Indianapolis, Ind.; three sons, Jeremy and Jo Ann Elliott of Gardendale, Ala., Jeff and Karen Elliott of Barboursville, W.Va., and James and Melissa Elliott of Indianapolis, Ind.; granddaughters, Danielle, Casey, Morgan, Rachel, Hanna, Victoria, Jocelyn, Becca, Holly and Haley; grandsons, Britton and Garrett and Ian; and a host of friends. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at Community of Grace United Methodist Church in Huntington, W.Va., with Pastor Steve Hamrick and Pastor Bill DeMoss officiating. CLARENCE GENE "CHUMPIE" LUCAS, 55, of East Lynn, W.Va., passed away as a result of a car accident on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at East Lynn, W.Va. He was born March 31,1956 in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Collie and Bertha Lucas. Four brothers, Pete, Butch, Bob, and Wilkie Hiat also preceded him in death. He leaves behind his loving companion of 20 years, Darlena Davis of East Lynn; five step-children whom he considered his own, Lonnie Pauley of East Lynn, Pricilla Evan, Missy Bowens, Misty Dawn Adkins, all of Wayne, and Jerry Puskas of East Lynn; five grandchildren, Donald Evans, Layken Evans, Ariana Burns, Gabriel Bowens, and Travis Pauley; and Austin Black and Autumn Isaacs whom he considered his grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Duayne Lucas and his wife Lisa of Huntington, and Orbie Dale Lucas and his wife Lori of Marmet, W.Va.; one sister, Eula Adams and her husband Homer of Proctorville, Oh.; and special nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors too numerous to mention. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Pastor Otis Bowen officiating. Burial will follow in the Lambert Cemetery, Harts, W.Va. ESAU PERRY, JR., 72, of Wilsondale, W.Va., passed away Sunday, December 4, 2011 at Bostford Hospital, Farmington Hills, Mich. He was born March 12,1940 in Wayne County, W.Va., a son of the late Esau and Sadie Perry. He is survived by two daughters, one son, five sisters, two brothers, and a host of friends and family to numerous to mention. Graveside services will be conducted at noon on Friday, December 9, 2011 at the Jerry Williamson Cemetery, Wilsondale, W.Va. Johnson Tiller Funeral Home is honored to serve the Perry family.

HOBERT C. MAYNARD, 90, of Wayne, WV went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 5, 2011 at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He was born February 20, 1921 in Wayne, WV, a son of the late Lafe and Ollie Pack Maynard, and stepson of the late Jetta Booton Maynard. Hobert was a retired self-employed retail merchant in East Lynn. He and his wife, Alma had many friends and helped many people. He was a member of the Echo United Baptist Church. He was also a U.S. Army WWII veteran with many medals and was a member of the VFW Post #1064 and American Legion Post #93, whose members will conduct graveside rites. Two daughters, Barbara Stapleton and husband, Virgil and Roberta Smith and husband, David; two brothers, Paul B. Maynard and Billy Charles Maynard, also preceded him in death. Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Alma Ramey Maynard; a daughter, Bonnie Pope and husband, Alan of North Ridgeville, OH; a sister, Agnes Lycans and husband, Garland of Lavalette, WV; nine grandchildren, Hoby, Ronnie and Roy Stapleton, Lynette Osburn, Susie and Taylor Smith, Sherry Hickey, Don and Frank Pope; twelve great-grandchildren, Diana, Janet, Ron Jr., Camille, Chris, Samantha, Hoby Jr., Joey Stapleton, Taylor Smith, Jr., Ashley Parson, Audrey Pope and Stanley Peterman, Jr. and a great-great-granddaughter, Madison; and host of additional family and friends. Visitation will be held from noon until service time at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 11, 2011 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, WV with Elders Roger Maynard and Orville Damron officiating. Burial will follow at Community Memorial Gardens at Wayne. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to assist with final expenses.

DONALD RAY PRITCHARD, 64, of Kenova, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at the St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington. He was born Jan. 17, 1947, in Branchland, W.Va., to the late Rev. William H. and Anna Mae (McNeely) Pritchard. He attended the Rock of Salvation Community Church. Mr. Pritchard united in marriage to Rita Scarberry Pritchard, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Junebug Scarberry (Angie) and Donald Ray Pritchard II (Kelsi). Other survivors include brothers, Doug Pritchard, Carl Pritchard and Woody Pritchard; along with grandchildren, Tyler Allen Scarberry, Mariah Handshaw, Michael Lee Mount, Kavan Mitchem, and "soon to be born" Kimberly Don Scarberry; along with a host of other relatives and many special friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pritchard was preceded in death by brothers, Norman, Gary, James "Yogi" and Jackie; and a sister, Barbara Jean Sumler. Mr. Pritchard was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He dearly enjoyed fishing and watching NASCAR and will be deeply missed by many. The family would like to thank St. Mary's Pastoral Care, the doctors, nurses and all of the staff for their excellent care during this difficult time. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home with Pastor Rod Justice officiating. Burial will follow in the Watson Cemetery in Branchland, W.Va. DAVID ALLEN VARNEY, 49, of Ceredo, died Monday, December 5, 2011, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He was born March 27, 1962, in Louisa, Ky., to David Lawson and Betty Sue (Tabor) Varney, who survive. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife Kimberly (Webb) Varney and their son Dalton Varney. Additional survivors include his sister Diana (Larry) Blackburn, niece Cara Nelson (Jeremy) Hall, nephew Brandon Nelson and fiancee Jayme Vonderhouvel, great-niece Taylor Nelson, ex- brother-in-law Andy Nelson, in-laws Jack and Evelyn Webb and many other friends and family. Anyone who met Dave loved him and he never met a stranger. He was very kind-natured, loving and giving. He loved to have fun with his friends and family. He was generous and devoted to all who knew him. He was a hard worker his entire life. David was a 1980 graduate of Wayne High School and was a member of the State Championship Football Team. In his twenties, he worked as a millwright in Piketon, Ohio, and then ran River Cities Ford in Lavalette. He helped run the family business, Dave's Marine, in Kenova for many years. He later worked at Action Petroleum, helped with the construction of Eco Quik Mart, built and ran nine car washes and built Dalton's Plaza. David was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Buena Vista Lodge No. 60 in Prichard, W.Va., and El-Hasa Shrine in Ashland, Ky. In addition, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Ceredo. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 8, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Ceredo with Pastor Rodney Hale officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Valley Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 7, at the church. Pallbearers will be Butch Berlin, Chris Black, Robbie Coleman, JasonCrabtree, Kirby Milum, Brandon Nelson, Ron Tabor and Rick Williamson. David enjoyed sharing Christmas with underprivileged children. In honor of David, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to David's Christmas Angel Fund, Town Square Bank, P.O. FLOYD BLANKENSHIP, 85, of Wayne, W.Va., passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, W.Va., by Elder Jimmy Lester and Bishop Isaac Markham. Burial will follow at the Blankenship Cemetery at Wayne. He was born Sept. 6, 1926, at Wayne, W.Va., a son of the late F. M. "Doc" and Chaney Spurlock Blankenship. Floyd was a retired pipeline worker for C. J. Hughes Construction Co. and was a driller for Mills Drilling Company. Floyd was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 93 of Kenova, of which he was a member. He was also preceded in death by his wife's parents, Ellia and Bryan Bradshaw; a son, Douglas Blankenship; a grandson, Alex Blankenship; and seven siblings. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Helen Ruth Bradshaw Blankenship; three daughters, Wanzella McCloud (Roy), Elizabeth Ann Markham (Isaac) and Deborah Stevens (Harold), all of Wayne, W.Va.; four sons, Bryan Blankenship (Della), Dwight Blankenship (Iris), Richard Blankenship and Dennis Blankenship (Tammy), all of Wayne; five sisters, Martha Perry, Rebecca Casteel, Lavon Johnson, Dorothy Napier and Geneva Wiloby; four brothers, Albert, Ed, Toliver and Roy Blankenship; 25 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Morris Funeral Home. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. MICHAEL ROSS EKELBERRY, 41, passed away December 5, 2011, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was born May 8, 1970, the beloved son of Emogene Trogdon Ekelberry, and the late Dick Ekelberry. He was the dear brother of Charles Joseph (Elizabeth) and John Kimball (Edgardo), brother-in-law to Barbara and the late Dick T. JR; uncle to Kimberly (Ken), Jennifer Arden (Doug), and Jack (Lois) Trogdon, Nancy Trimble, Ida (Allen) Clark, Hewlet (Barbara) Trogdon and Mark (Justine) Trogdon. A lot of cousins in West Virginia, Michigan, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Montana. He was preceded in death by grandparents Hewlet and Ethel Ross Trogdon, uncles John Trogdon and Joe Trimble. Michael was a graduate of Rutherford B. Hayes High School in Delaware, Ohio and a graduate of Ohio State University. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan, a collector of many items and loved Cleveland, photographing architecture of old buildings and cemeteries. He was a lab technician at NeoPro Imaging Inc. and loved the varied photos he worked on and the people he worked with. A memorial will be held on January 7, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 101 Franklin St. Delaware.

M. GAIL BRUMFIELD, 71, of Huntington, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at her residence. She was born July 4, 1940, in Wayne County, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings and one son, Hurston Ray Brumfield. She was a former employee of Adel Fasteners. Funeral service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Reger Funeral Chapel; burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Wayne Community Memorial Gardens. Gail is survived by her husband Estel Brumfield, three sons and two daughters-in-law, Steven Estel (Cindy) Brumfield, Martin Ray Brumfield and Bryan Edward (Tina) Brumfield, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. JEAN T. BENTLEY, 85, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, in the Hospice House, Huntington. Jean was born Sept. 23, 1926, in Wayne County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Jesse James and Louella Carver Dempsey. Her husband, Carl Bentley, and several sisters and brothers, also preceded her in death. She attended Central Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Bentley and Carla (Merle) Sherman; two grandchildren, Suzie Bentley and Amanda (Matt) Venoy: two great-grandchildren, Brock and Karlee Tackett; three sisters, Clara Moore, Patty Buchannan and Emily (Louis) Sharp; and a special niece, Scherry Johnson. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Ivan Asbury officiating. Burial will be in Dock's Creek Cemetery, Kenova, W.Va. MILDRED DORIS HOWERTON, 88, of Huntington, widow of Ernest Howerton, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. She was born on Dec. 19, 1922, in Mason County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Robert and Mary Grimm Winebrenner. She is survived by a son, Phillip (Marta) Howerton of Fairfax Station, Va.; two daughters, Nancy (Bruce) Crockett of Wayne and Martha (Gary) Zipperian of Huntington; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel in Barboursville with Pastor Ron Burnsworth officiating. Burial will follow. EDMOND THOMPSON JR., 62, of Staffordsville Ky., passed away December 8, 2011 at his home. Edmond was born September 2, 1949 in Huntington, the son of the late Edmond Thompson. Edmond worked at Rubbermaid in Ohio for 27 years, was a member of the Fort Gay Methodist Church and served in the United States Air Force. He loved his family and enjoyed life. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include a wife, Roberta Thompson of Staffordsville, his mother Faye Thompson of WV; three daughters, Kimberly (Rick) Hairston of NC, Laura Faye Chaffin of WV, Lisa (Stephen) McLaughlin of Ohio; three sons Eddie (Roxanna ) Regan of Ohio, Glenn (Rhonda) Regan of Ohio, Daniel (Lynn) Regan of Ohio: 18 grandchildren; Samantah, Jonathan, Sarah, Stephanie, Stacy Regan; Benjamin, Rachel, Abby, Caleb, Elijah McLaughlin; Drake, Sky, Aira, Bree, Dustin, Bo, Peyton Regan, Kennedy Chaffin, and one more grandchild on the way; two brothers, David Wesley Thompson of WV and John Thompson of Ohio; one aunt Wilma Hinton of WV. Memorial services were conducted on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home by Chaplain Pablo Gonzales. Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home.

JOHN RICHARD "POPPY" JORDAN, 89, of Dunlow, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 9, 2011. He was born April 27, 1922 in Wayne County, a son of the late Sidney and Mary Elizabeth (Robinson) Jordan. His wife of 47 years, Eunice Maynard Jordan also preceded him in death along with two infant children, Genevia and Roger; two brothers, Golden Jordan and Everette Jordan; and infant sister, Eva Jordan. John was a retired coal miner and an 18 year member of the Macedonia Baptist Church. He is survived by his three children, Larry Jordan and his wife Edna, Mary Lou Maynard and her husband Buck, all of Dunlow, and Lindsey Jordan who lived with and took care of "Poppy"; his grandchildren, Peggy Fletcher and husband John of Genoa, W.Va., Richard Maynard and Anne Smith of Genoa, Hannah Jordan of Columbus, Ohio, Larry Jordan of Dunlow, Michael Jordan of Montgomery, W.Va., James Jordan of Columbus, Jason Jordan of Montgomery, Johnathan Jordan of Columbus, Raymond Abbott and wife Shelly of Wayne, Nathaniel Jordan and girlfriend Beth Smith, and Kevin Jordan, all of Wayne; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one loving brother, James Jordan and his wife Catherine of Wayne; and a host of friends, family, and brothers and sisters in Christ. The family would like to thank the Mingo-Wayne nurses and the staff at Three Rivers Medical Center for their care and support. "He's only gone away with a friend." GEORGE DONALD ASBURY, 84, of Huntington, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, W.Va., with Pastors Fred Ferguson and Paul Ray Farley officiating. Burial will follow at the Asbury Cemetery at East Lynn, W.Va. George was born March 21, 1927, in East Lynn, W.Va. He was the proud owner of Asbury's Supermarket and Town and Country Furniture for 53 years. He took pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loved for them to visit and play in the back yard. He was the 12th of 14 children of the late Moses and Minnie Asbury. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, George Donald Asbury Jr.; and siblings Lucian, Elmer, Claude, Hoover, Woodrow, Tom, Barney, Bill, Hartley, Hoover and Pinky Asbury, Sally Griffin and Nannie Crabtree. SHAWNA JEAN "NAWNY" MANN ADKINS, 50, of Kenova died Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was born April 16, 1961 in Huntington to James Irvin Mann who survives, and Annajean Wilson Mann who preceded Shawna in death. Nawny was an active member of the Spirit of Faith Church in Kenova where she served many roles over the years as Secretary, Treasurer, Pianist, Teacher, Loving Heart Mission and leader of the "Monkey Class." She enjoyed volunteering for the Wayne County Special Olympics, where she helped run the Tent Town between events. She was also an avid baker, having won two consecutive years at the CK Autumnfest. Mrs. Adkins was an excellent mother and wife who loved life and will be greatly missed by many. SAMUEL HAGEN "SAM" STANLEY, 74, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Sam was born on April 18, 1937, in Wayne, W.Va., the son of the late Paul J. Stanley and Pauline Napier Stanley Miller. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother John Stanley. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Janet "Sue" Stanley; two daughters and sons-in-law Debra Jean and Kent Sargent of Greenville, S.C., and Laura "Gidget" and Jim Ross of Huntington; three granddaughters, Samantha and Jaymi Ross of Huntington and Katherine "Katie" Sargent of Greenville, S.C.; one brother and sister-in-law Jay and Sue Stanley of Knoxville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews, and his dog Lucy-Patty. Sam was a graduate of Marshall University. having earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts in 1965, then a Master's Degree in Journalism in 1980. He was an active member of the SAE Fraternity, where he met many lifelong friends. Sam worked for The Herald-Dispatch and the former evening paper, The Huntington Advertiser for many years. He was also news editor at the Somerset (Ky.) Commonwealth-Journal, sports editor of the Sanford (Fla.) Herald and a sports writer at the Orlando Sentinel. He was a Sports Information Director for Marshall in the 1970's and the Marshall Alumni Association in the 1990's. Sam retired from the Big Green Foundation in 2010. He also taught journalism for Brevard (Fla.) Community College from 1988 to 1998. Sam was involved in many local organizations, including the Huntington Kiwanis Club and Day Care Center, the HuntingtonArea Salvation Army and the Western Babe Ruth Baseball League. JACK HENSLEY HARDIN, 85, of Ceredo, W.Va., died Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. Jack was born August 15, 1926, in Kenova, W.Va., a son of the late George W. and Della Mae Hensley Hardin. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife Myra Wheeler Hardin and his twin brother James W. "Jimmy" Hardin. Jack was retired from The Herald-Dispatch, where he had been a reporter for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during WWII in the South Pacific. Lt. Colonel MICHAEL SCOTT LAKIN, 42, of Charleston, W.Va., died on December 22, 2011, from injuries sustained after the crash of his aerobatic plane near Marysville, Ohio. Michael was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents James S. and Lyda Frazier Lakin of Fort Gay, W.Va.; maternal grandparents William R. Short and Nannie Moore Short of Louisa, Ky.; two uncles, PFC Richard Lee Lakin of Fort Gay, W.Va., and Billy F. Short of Louisa, Ky.; and two aunts, Virgie Pelfrey of Huntington, W.Va., and Blanche Wellman of Ft. Gay, W.Va. Michael spent his early years in Kenova, W.Va., and his formative years in Wheelersburg, Ohio, where he attended elementary and high school, graduating from Wheelersburg High in 1987. Michael completed his first solo flight on September 15, 1985, and earned his private pilot's license one year later, launching his aviation career. Afterward, at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., Michael earned his commercial pilot's license at age 18 and his flight instructor certificate a year later, ultimately graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Studies. Michael then joined the United States Marine Corps, for whom he flew attack helicopters in the Far East. He later served as a fixed-wing flight instructor at Naval Air Station Whiting Field near Pensacola in the Florida panhandle. After leaving active duty in 1999, Michael served with the W.Va. Air National Guard, 130th Airlift Wing, based in Charleston, and became a C-130 Hercules pilot. He was a full-time Guardsman and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He flew many combat missions in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Michael had recently returned from another deployment to Iraq, where he was an operations officer for RC-26 detachment out of Clarksburg, W.Va. Michael also flew for the W.Va. state government's aviation unit, beginning in 2008, and was a corporate pilot for then-Governor Joe Manchin, now a U.S. Senator. In the weeks following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Michael was one of just a few pilots who helped fly troops and supplies to and from New Orleans. Michael also entertained many at airshows, piloting his 2004 American Champion Bellanca Super Decathlon stunt plane. Michael was an active member of Christ Church United Methodist in Charleston, W.Va., where he assisted as a volunteer for the Breaking Bread ministry, a free dinner church members offer to the community. HAROLD PRICE, 91, of Ranger, W.Va., passed away in his sleep Christmas morning, December 25, 2011. He was born Nov. 8, 1920, on Lick Creek, Wayne County, W.Va., a son of the late L.C. and Arizona Sanders Price. He served in the U.S. Army as a tank commander during World War II and retired from Union Concrete Pipe Co., Ceredo, W.Va. He was preceded in death by brothers, Dillard, Direl and Howard Price, and Tom Ramey; and sisters, Lena Adkins, Nellie Elliott and June Skeens. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Pauline Dyer Price; one son, Sherrell and LaDonna Price; one daughter, Arema and Keith Tomblin, all of Ranger; two grandsons, David Alan Price, and Brian Tomblin and Pam Davis of Ranger; one granddaughter, Amy Tomblin Adkins and Terry of Alum Creek, W.Va.; one great-grandson, Austin Adkins of Alum Creek; one sister, Blanche McClellan of Lyburn, W.Va.; and his special four-legged friend, Jake. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, W.Va., with Bro. Terry Cyfers officiating. The burial will follow in the Sanders Cemetery, Ranger, W.Va., where a military graveside service will be conducted by American Legion Post 111. GRETHEL WILEY, 74 of East Lynn, W.Va., passed away on Monday, December 26, 2011, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Burial will follow at the Taylor Cemetery, Kiahsville, W.Va. She was born September 4, 1937, at Logan, W.Va., a daughter of the late Jeremiah and Della Wiley Williamson. Grethel was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and a member of Mount Calvary Church. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Garnet Freeman and three brothers, Otho Williamson, O'Dell Williamson and Terry Williamson. Grethel is survived by her loving husband Teddy Wiley; three daughters, Connie (Tony) Perry of Prichard, W.Va., Lydia (Roy) Crabtree of East Lynn, Noka Martin of East Lynn; three sons, Teddy (Aletha) Wiley Jr. of Kiahsville and Ben Taylor Wiley Jr. and his fiancée of Lavalette, W.Va., Gregory (Geneva) Wiley of Ranger, WV; one sister Myrtle (Sam) Taylor of Kiahsville; one brother, Hallie (Marie) Williamson of Wayne; 11 grandchildren, Tiffany Wiley, Brad Arbogast, Lakin Tomblin, Scott Kokavec, Dennis Lee Martin III, Ben Taylor Wiley III, Bobby Joe Wiley, Sheana Wiley, Shannon Wiley, Amy Wiley, Brandy Brumfield, and 26 great-grandchildren. ROBERT LEE "JAKE" ANDREWS, 74, of Wayne, WV, died Saturday, December 26, 2011 at his residence. Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Smith Cemetery on Mt. Vernon Ridge in Wayne, WV. He was born April 4, 1937 in Wayne County, WV, a son of Jesse James and Bertha Carter Andrews. Jake was a U.S. Navy Veteran and a self-employed carpenter. Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Clara Osburn and Juanita Staley; a brother, Jesse Andrews; a niece, Janice Osburn Keck; and two nephews, John Osburn and Byford Osburn. Survivors include two great-nieces Sheryl Osburn Vanhoose, Cindy Osburn Nesselroade; two great nephews, Stephen Keck and David Keck; and a special life-long friend, Ronnie Cade and wife, Sue of Huntington, WV. IVALEE FAYE CYRUS EARLS, 80, Ceredo, W.Va., was called home by her Lord on Wednesday, December 28, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Edward and Armilda Lowe Cyrus, brothers Lemmie Lowell and Charles Wallace Cyrus, sister Lucille, husband Billy Denford Earls and son Hobert Edward Earls, and her second husband, Pearley Anderson Chatterton. She is survived by her brother Raymond Edsell Cyrus; grandchildren Kimberly Dawn Cunningham of Brunswick, Ohio and Mark Edward Earls (Chelsea) of Priest River, Idaho; great-grandchildren Meghan Noel Cunningham of Parkersburg, W.Va., Olivia Joyce and Oliver Cyrus Earls of Priest River, Idaho; step-son Bill Chatterton (Tammi) and step-grandchildren Amanda Chatterton Edwards and Joe Chatterton; several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was cared for in the home by Donna Shull and cousin Joyce Stephens Jones. She was employed at Corbin, Ltd., for seven years in the late 1960's to early 1970's. Following her years at Corbin, she spent her time as a homemaker where she also cared for her mother and later her son and brother. She enjoyed working puzzles, knitting basket liners and table cloths, Southern Gospel music and Marshall football. Funeral service will be held at Reger Funeral Chapel, Tuesday January 3, 2012, at 2 p.m. with Elgie "Junior" Sullivan officiating. CHLOE ANNA EPLING, 100 years, 11 months and 12 days old of Wayne, W.Va., went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 29, 2011, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. She was born January 17, 1911, in Lincoln County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Jackson and Mary Swiney Watts. She was a homemaker and was a member of Tom's Creek United Baptist Church, and was a former Sunday school teacher. She was also preceded in death by her husband Theodore Epling; a daughter Elata Carol Holland, a son-in-law Donald E. Adkins, and three brothers and nine sisters. Survivors include her daughter Juanita Adkins of Wayne; her son Raymond (Sandy) Epling of Lewisburg, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Wes (Kimberly) Holland of Milton, W.Va., and Sarah (Gordon) Burns of Morgantown, W.Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan Avery Holland, Sydney Renae Holland and Taylor Chase Holland. She was loved and will be missed by many friends and family. CHARLES D. BACK, formerly of Louisa and Fort Gay. Funeral services for a former Ashland, Louisa, and Fort Gay resident who served 26 years in the Air Force and attained the highest enlisted rank and was the recipient of one of the military branch's most prestigious awards, will be conducted Wednesday, December 28, 2011, in Universal City, TX. Charles D. Back, 71, died December 13, 2011. A resident of Gilbert, AZ, he retired from the USAF as a Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt) and then worked for Honeywell for 20 years. He was born in Fort Gay to Pheobe Ratliff Back of Ashland and the late David Back. Also surviving are his wife Maria (Joyce) Back and their children Guy, Gary, Wendy, David and Crystal, and grandchildren; Jessica, Devon, Cody, Pheobe, Carson and James. He is also survived by two sisters, Patricia (Elton) Ramey and Martha (James) Preston both of Ashland. The funeral will be held at Colonial Funeral Home in Universal City at noon with burial in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. He grew up in Louisa and Fort Gay and attended Ashland High School and Berea College. He was a 1958 graduate of Fort Gay High School. CMSgt Back was the subject of a feature story in the Ashland Daily Independent in July of 1981. Earlier that month he had been presented the Dudley C. Sharp Award during a ceremony at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio, TX. The presentation was made by Secretary of the Air Force Verne Orr and CMSgt Back was the first enlisted recipient. He was given the honor for developing and testing a centralized aircraft support system. It had a projected life-cycle savings of more than $75 million in personnel, fuel and maintenance costs for the Air Training Command. Other military honors include: Airman of the Quarter, Man of the Year, a meritorious service medal for outstanding achievement, two Air Force commendation medals and five campaign stars for Vietnam service. He had tours in Northern Africa, England and Southeast Asia, including Cambodia and Da Nang, Vietnam. CMSgt Back began working on his new logistical support system in 1978 and it had to receive Congressional approval. He worked with architectural engineers contracted to design the Centralized Aircraft Support System which was tested and put into service at Randolph. It was designed to service T-38 trainers and was to be expanded to other Air Training Command bases.
